Does Vitamin B3 prevent Basal Cell Carcinoma?

There is limited evidence to suggest that vitamin B3 (niacin) may have some preventive effects against basal cell carcinoma (BCC), the most common type of skin cancer.

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2015 found that high doses of nicotinamide (a form of vitamin B3) reduced the incidence of new non-melanoma skin cancers, including BCC, by 23% in high-risk individuals. The study involved 386 participants who had a history of at least two non-melanoma skin cancers.

Another study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology in 2017 found that nicotinamide could protect against UV-induced DNA damage and reduce inflammation in skin cells, both of which are risk factors for BCC.

While these studies suggest that vitamin B3 may have some preventive effects against BCC, more research is needed to confirm these findings and determine the optimal dosage and duration of treatment. It's important to note that taking high doses of vitamin B3 can cause side effects, such as flushing, itching, and gastrointestinal symptoms. As with any supplement, it's important to talk to your healthcare provider before taking vitamin B3 for skin cancer prevention.
